I still remember the excitement when Samsung camrea released NX10.
It was world first APS-C format mirrorless camera which is quantum jump from point-and-shoot desgin.
(could) appeals to serious photographers including early-adapt professionals not only for casual snappers.
Suddenly new market formed so called ‘mirrorless camera’ and major players rushed there.
By that time, market consensus was the camera type which reads image directly from sensor is workable only on
point-and-shoot. Larger sensor, APS-C enduced tremendous difficulties to achieve AF due to too shallow depth of focus
and data read speed due to much larger sensor area.
Now looking at back, all those skeptism are entirely overcomed along the way one by one.
Complete new concept, almost Science Fiction dream in film era, & fundamental camera flatform is evoling in light speed.
Sadly though Samsung itself is diminishing from the market now…. What a irony…
This is world first ever Contax/Kiev adapter produced for Samsung NX series.
Just 1 proto-type made as shown in here and will run batch production soon.

Economy is running in several different ways.
When a big tree fall down, it is not simly the end of forest. The fallen tree become fertile of the land growing new & fresh trees
and make many other big trees in next generation. When a company fall down, it could be source of many new start-ups,
some fallen again but some catch up ladder of success, eventually they become a big family of the industry…
Another case is when fresh new startups growing, a big guy come to play, merge, attack & dry out other than itself.
Such a big coorperate never be a good place for challenging ideas or startups. It makes dry land around it with shadow of
Samsung camera started as small department of mechanical manufacturing company, merged to Samsung TechWin later,
and merged again to Samsung Imaging and finally become a part of mega-size Samsung electronics.
It is sad watching such a startup fascinating with ideas and challenges become slow & boring place in a short time.
They once hit the world market with surprise, then make mistakes as meged to bigger company and delay decision & more
stupid mistakes trying to combine mobilephone and camera….. finally faced the consequence to stop camera business
Contax rangefinder was one of 2 pillar of German camera industry in 20th Century, came from Zeiss Ikon.
Unlike Leitz which drives simple and efficient design inspite of users troublesome handling, Zeiss Ikon put
their steps to high-end & complicated engineering product no matter how cumbersome production work is.
It makes Zeiss Ikon product as ‘over-engineered’ or ‘way too over engineered’ while elegant & attractive.
Before WW II, Zeiss Ikon located at Dresden & produced Contax I, II and III.
After WW II, it moved to Stuttgart & produced Contax IIa and IIIa.
Above example is Contax IIa.
You will appreciate Contax’s film back plate removed entirely if you ever use Leica III
which requires inserting the film into small slit.
Contax uses vertical travel metal blade shutter.
Most others uses horizental travel cloth shutter.
Travel distance top to bottom is 24mm while right to left is 36mm. Obviously vertical travel has benefit to increase flash sync speed…
but small rangefinder body is not right platform to try such an idea. Simply there is no space around for vertical moving shutter mechanism.
Engineers in Zeiss Ikon sliced the shutter blade into small pieces (shown above), fold them into almost non-existance space of top side
where already crowded with rangefinder optics.
When it comes to SLR, things work much better. SLR is basically hungky box with penta prism and mirror box, easily accomodate
4 larger piece of blade for shutter mechanism.
Carl Zeiss Sonnar lens
Sonnar is only design before WW II achived large aperture (f2.0 or up) and crisp resolution and contrast.
Air-to-glass surface is dominent factor to determine lens performance without coating, so Sonnar’s 3 group design
is only way for good enough aberation control in large aperture design.
Lens coating introduced and applied to optical products after WW II (lens coating itself is the patent of Carl Zeiss)
Sonnar reached highest point of performance. But camera platform radically changed, while rangefinder camera disappered
in the market SLR camera pour into there.
Sonnar has short back-focal distance, not appropriate SLR design which need long distance from lens to film.
Double gauss Planar desgin replaced standard lens family since then…
