Methods

In this study, authors extracted resveratrol from peanut stems. They treated prostate cancer cells that were resistant to radiation therapy with both the extracted resveratrol and the peanut stems. They wanted to examine the effect of treatment on cancer cell growth.

Key Findings

Key Findings: Results showed that resveratrol was the major component of peanut stems. Both resveratrol and peanut stems inhibited the growth of the radiation-resistant prostate cancer cells separately. There was also a synergistic effect, where the combination of irradiation with either resveratrol or peanut stems dramatically inhibited tumor growth. According to the authors, this is the first study to indicate that peanut stems contain a high amount of resveratrol. It also showed that both resveratrol and the peanut stems by themselves stopped cancer cells from growing.
